Sway To The Sounds Of The Caribbean At Home: Turks And Caicos Music

Sway to the Sounds of the Caribbean at Home: Turks and Caicos Music

This week we’re placing a spotlight on Turks and Caicos music. Why? Because few elements start a party, lift the spirits, and set the tone as effectively as good music, and our island is known for it.

Whether you use your favorite playlists to motivate you through a workout, create an uplifting feel to your backyard BBQ, or remind you of your favorite times and places, music inspires and remains an innate part of human culture.

If you’ve visited Turks and Caicos, you’ll be familiar with three styles of music that are common throughout our islands: The soul-soothing sounds of Reggae, the upbeat rhythms of Ripsaw, and the lively tempo of Calypso music.

Last month we outlined a few ways to infuse your home with fragrances reminiscent of the Turks and Caicos Islands. What’s more perfect than accompanying the smells of Turks & Caicos with your favorite Turks and Caicos music? Here are a few samples of our favorite Caribbean sounds and Turks and Caicos music to try at home:

#1: Ripsaw

Originating in the Turks and Caicos Islands, Ripsaw music (also known as ‘Rake-N-Scrape’) consists of sounds made from a handsaw, accompanied by drum beats, guitar, and an interchangeable variety of other instruments including harmonica, keyboards, triangle, and even accordions. The result is a distinctly Bahamian sound that’s cheerful, energetic, and fun. Ripsaw is the national music of Turks and Caicos, and when you visit Turks and Caicos, you’ll be sure to hear ripsaw played at beach bars, fish frys, and the annual Conch Festival.

#2: Bahamian Calypso

Originating from Trinidad and Tobago, the afro-influenced, upbeat sounds of Calypso music mix the sounds of steel pan drums, marimbas, horns, tambourines, maracas and a myriad of other instruments that are often mixed in. Calypso is the music most commonly associated with tropical beach bands and Caribbean carnivals. Caribbean Pirates Steel Band has several Bahamian Calypso tracks on Spotify to enjoy and pick new favorites from.

#3: Jamaican Reggae:

Originating from Jamaica, the unmistakable rhythms of Reggae (and it’s precursor, Ska) have been widely adopted across many Caribbean and Pacific islands, with each local adding a bit of their own influence and flair. In Turks and Caicos, you’ll hear Reggae played at beach bars and festivals along with Ripsaw and Calypso.

Reggae’s popularity is no surprise, and you probably have a few of your own favorite Reggae tracks already on your playlist. A few popular favorites include Stir it Up by Bob Marley & The Wailers, Camera Show by Protoje, Tune In by Gregory Isaacs, Big Ship by Freddie McGregor, Rivers of Babylon by the Melodians, and Have You Seen the Rain by Droop Lion to name a few.

This Caribbean Reggae Beach Groove playlist on Spotify includes several popular Reggae tracks that are perfect for lounging on the deck or in your backyard.

#4: Mixed Genre Turks and Caicos Music (Reggae/Calypso/Ripsaw)

Most interestingly, you’ll often hear Turks and Caicos music that playfully combines different music genres, such as this Calypso-infused Reggae favorite with our very own Val Kalliecharan on the steel pan drum.

Our friends at Panoply Sport Fishing and Luxury Charters recently shared their Caribbean music playlist on YouTube, which contains several Ripsaw and Reggae tracks to create the tropical island feeling at home.

And just for fun, here are two, fun Turks and Caicos music videos by Jack for the Island of Turks and Caicos and Turks and Caicos Happy by Mark Gangasingh and Lee Welch that will get you in the mood to visit our magnificent island as soon as possible.
